Well stumled across this site with my girlfriend while looking up oral cancer. I am 38 years old and have dipped for the past 23 years. I dipped 1-1.5 cans of copenhagen a day. Well the reason we were looking up oral cancer was on Thursday night while brushing my teeth I scrapped a receding tooth gumline too hard and woke up friday morning with a sore gum and a huge white patch. So course this scared the shit out of me much like it does everytime but something was different looking about this white patch than the normal ones that I get in places from time to time. Course that didn't stop me from sticking the crap in my mouth but scared none the less. Saturday I ended up going to clinic care cause my lymphnoids were swolen, the white patch was still there and had gotten larger, and my gums had become swolen and tender. Got prescribed antibiotics and sent home. Needless to say my 1 can a day habit became a one dip only for a few minute habit. I thought thats stupid to to put myself throught the pain of dipping and only doing it once a day so I decided to quit. I went to the my family doctor on Monday and had them check everything out. They did blood work and told me no cancer. I have bacterial infection of the gums and strep throat. I guess being sick has allowed me not to feel the withdraw as bad as I ususally do when I have tried to quit. Now that I have started feeling better I have actually had more of a craving. I still have that white patch in my mouth which still concerns me and swolen gums and now have about 10 ulcers on my lip and tongue. This has been motivation for me like no other. I think with the help of this site, my family, and this scare this quit will be my last one.

welcome chris.

check out this link on posting roll http://www.killthecan.org/roll/

most importantly chris...when your mouth heals...when the fear is gone and the nic bitch starts to slowly whisper "see you are OK, I aint gonna hurt you." don't forget the fear you felt this time around. next time around the news may not be as good.

don't put yourself through that again.

burn the boat. no going back now.

Yup, it's when times are good that this bitch starts drunk dialing you. Keep the quit strong, brother. You can do this. It gets very manageable after only a couple of weeks. I quit with you today!

In case nobody explained it to you, your tongue is swolen and bumpy because you havent dipped in a few days. You've kept your ph levels in your mouth out of whack for the last 23 years, now they're adjusting back to where they're supposed to be. I'm day 31 and the first 4 or 5 were the worst. After 16 years of dipping it took a few days for things to stabilize. It definitely levels off though. I still have to lean on the fake "no nic" stuff every few days (which didn't seem to bother my gf as much as the real stuff) but for the most part I'm crave free. Stay solid and pm me or anyone else if you need anything.

Good quittin with ya.

Good stuff LA,

I always use this ledger.

Sco dipped for 20 years x 365 = 7,300 days vs. 293 days quit.

It does level out, but you have to give it some time. Remember, you are an addict. Freedom is created 1 day at a time.

Few things to note.

The nic bitch is going to pop back in to your head with a vengeance when all your health issues are gone. I promise you it will happen. She will say things like "it wasn't dip that did that", "you're healthy now, you can start again".

Are you ready for that?

During you quit never forget that white patch that you got. Next time you might not be so lucky.

Well it hasn't been as bad as I might have thought it was gonna be. The nicotine doesn't seem to be much the problem as the habitual rituals like driving, walking my mail route, after meals so on. I have to say yesterday was a bitch. I had a hard time from the waking up till about 1:30 with craving that dip but I resisted temptation and that felt so good. Thanks for all ur posts to me about what to expect.

You will see those regular craves start to taper off a bit really soon. Be patient, have a plan, and get through each crave one at a time. It gets a lot easier, and your body will feel so much better. Good Work!

I'm 9 days quit now. My infection in my mouth is gone. This is the longest in the 23 yrs that I have quit. The cravings are there and sometimes have been really strong. I have been using gum, candy, sunflower seeds, and have purchased a can of bacc-off for the times when my situational cravings are really high. I have to admit my mouth feels the best it ever has before. My breath smells good. My tongue doesn't have a nasty brown film on it. Actually overall my health feels better. I don't have heart palpitations like I had before and sometimes got chest cramps and heartburn all seem to be gone.

You quit before? You and I must have different definitions of the word "quit".

Today. That's all that matters. Beware of comparing your quit against past failed attempts. You are quit today. You have given your word. You will be successful. It's that simple.
