I've been dipping for about 6 years now, started when I got into police academy and has continued on since. About a year ago, I transitioned to Snus in the hopes of weaning myself from tobacco entirely but it just became another really bad habit to take the edge off of stressful times at work.

About a week ago, my 5 year old son asked me why I still used tobacco and said pointedly, "Daddy, you should stop before it hurts you". So there was my motivation. I went inside the house, the garage, the patrol car, and my truck and dumped all of the dip & snus that I had into a garbage bag, drove down to the local dump and threw it away. I knew if I threw it on our garbage can, I would be tempted to get the bag out before it was picked up (disgusting, but I know how desperate I would get if I couldn't find my can before).

The day I quit was August 29, 2011 and here I am 9 days later. A little grouchier than usual but not really getting those massive cravings that I had the first few days. The biggest thing for me is not having that minty mass in my mouth. I've been using sunflower seeds and gum, which help slightly, but the gum is just too sweet for me so it's less effective. I've upped my workout routine and that's really kept my mind off of dipping and given me a little extra incentive to take it to the next level.

I'll get through this and I'll be better for it.

Great Choice! I made that choice 132 days ago. I now have freedom and my sons are proud of me. Good job posting roll. Keep postng your promise and read everything on this site--old intros, HOF speeches--everything.

You got this!

Best choice you have ever made in your life. I was LEO for 10 years so I know the stress, but you can and will perform your job without nicotine.

Reach out if you need a kick in the ass.

Thanks everyone for the support! It feels good to be a part of a community that's going through or has gone through the same thing.

A bit of a headache this afternoon after I fought off a craving, but I just browsed to this forum and started reading. Got me over the craving and the headache is gone!

A "bad habit" does not incline a rational human being to begin digging through gargage for something to chew/suck on.

An ADDICTION will, however, create new levels of desperation when the addiction is not fed.

I'm just clarifying that you are an addict. Nicotine is not a habit. That realization will help you get your mind in the right place for this battle we are fighting.

And... yes, you will be a better person. Soon.

" to take the edge off of stressful times at work. " I've got buddies in Afghanistan in daily firefights with the Taliban who are keeping their quit. Your job is not near as stressful as those troops. I have a stressful job too (combat medic) but dont ever use job stress as an excuse to cave. I'm on day 12. WE can make it to the HOF together.

Glad to learn about that, Whiskey. One of the guys who quit with my group (December 2009), whose name is SFNurse, redeployed just after reaching the hall. Thanks for your service too.

Chief, he won't see anything about your question in his inbox. If you PM him, he'll get an email notice from QSXtreme that he has a PM from you. He'll see that next time he opens his email.

Gump,

I did that the day after he didn't post. Hopefully, life just got busy or something.
